Guarding Against Poisoning

Poisoning of cats is not that common as cats are very fussy about what they ingest and will vomit readily if they have consumed an unsuitable or possible poisonous substance.

That said, there are common items that can prove fatal to your cat. These exist both in your home and your garden. Aspirin and slug pellets are the two most common sources of cat poisoning.

Other dangerous substances are solvents, insecticides, antifreeze, alcohol, methylated spirits, disinfectants, household cleaners and various plants, which include poinsettias, rhododendrons, lupins, Christmas rose, azaleas, clematis, sweetpeas etc.

Fortunately most cats prefer chewing on grass or herbs so the most important task is to ensure that any grass has not been treated with fertilisers or any form of weedkillers.

If A CAT SHOWS SIGNS OF INGESTING POISONS TAKE IT IMMEDIATELY TO YOUR VET ALONG WITH DETAILS OF THE SUBSTANCE INGESTED AND THE CONTAINER OR PACKAGING.
